How often do I need to come in to quit smoking?

On average, it is normal to see your acupuncturist from 2 to 3 times a week in the beginning of your journey to being smoke-free, and later on once a week as withdrawal symptoms subside. At acupuncture specialists we will go through an in-depth consultation to determine the best fit treatment plan for you to quit.

Addictions

After I have quit, do I still need to keep coming for it to continue to work?

No, however, we recommend to keep coming for regular treatments to stay in optimal health going forward. Many patients want to keep coming when they see how great they feel!

Where will the acupuncture needles be placed?

When it comes to quitting smoking, auricular (ear) acupuncture is often used which are very effective in suppressing cravings. Ear acupuncture works for quitting smoking because the nerves in the head stimulate the nervous system therefore suppress the urge to smoke. As always, the specific points used by our acupuncturist will be determined by your individual history & needs based on your initial consultation. Acupuncture is a very individualized treatment.

Is there anything I need to do outside of my sessions to get the best results?

Acupuncture treatment alone to quit smoking is a wonderful step forward to optimal health. Our acupuncturist will also likely recommend some lifestyle changes to incorporate along with treatment sessions for the best, and most sustainable results.

Lifestyle changes along with acupuncture sessions:

  • Working in good nutrition habits

  • Drink plenty of water – this one is especially important as intense cravings have been linked to dehydration, so drinking water will help to avoid relapse.

  • Get plenty of rest

  • Exercise

  • Avoid caffeine & sugar – both of these can intensify withdrawal symptoms

I have heard about herbal remedies for quitting smoking, what types of herbal remedies will be used for quitting smoking?

It is indeed helpful when herbal formulas are incorporated into the treatment plan, but aren’t always necessary. Herbs can aid in curbing cravings while at home, as well as other withdrawal symptoms and irritability. Additionally, certain herbs can repair damaged tissues created from smoking. Our acupuncturist will determine what, if any, herbs would be needed to give you the most success in quitting smoking.
